Apart from the African athletes, few other athletes from other countries have ever broken the marathon record. These include Sun Yun-bok from Korea in 1947, Sergei Popove from the Soviet Uniion in 1958, and Derek Clayton from Australia in 1969. Currently, African athletes from the East African countries of Kenya and Ethiopia appear to dominate the sport of marathon.
